The Most Popular Warhammer 40K Armies
The most important decision you can make in Warhammer 40K is to select your army. You should have already made some decisions about your visual preferences, play style, and what armies those around you have. Now comes the time to pick the army itself. There are four armies that are the most popular: Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Chaos.
Space Marines are the classic army of Warhammer 40K. They are humanity's greatest warriors. They're genetically enhanced and completely loyal to the Emperor. They are well-known for their dreadnought unit, a powerful combatant that can take a beating.
Orks seek to destroy the Imperium of Man. These green-skinned aliens are strong and muscular, and they like war and disputes. They are combative and quick to attack. They can dish out a lot of damage and take it right back.
The Eldar are the oldest race in the universe, so they're also the most technologically advanced. There are two playable types, the Craftworld Eldar and the Dark Eldar (a third type is in the history of the game, but it is not playable). They are defined by their speed and technology, but they have small numbers in battle and cannot take much damage before being defeated.
The Chaos are the most famous enemies of humankind. They are made up of fallen Space Marines, Imperial Guards, and more, either turned to the side of Chaos or possessed by the Chaos Daemons that are present in the warp zones. Chaos actually includes a variety of armies with many different play styles present.
If you don't want any of these choices, there are plenty more options available to you. Remember, look at their background, or history, to see if you like the story behind them; look at their appearance, to see if it appeals to your visual preferences; and look at their tactics, to see if they fit your play style. And maybe the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, or Chaos is right for you.
